If the flash does not fire on the camera at all then look at the manual for the camera. It has a flimsy feel to it, and pushing it will often result in multiple flashes at random intervals. There are no specific books on this flash. Ages ago I picked up a flash gun from Jessops in the sale and never worked out how to use it.

Enabling the optical slave function disables power-save mode, so it works fine as an optical slave. This misfeature makes it pretty useless for strobist type flash with radio triggers. One of the big advantage of this digital stuff is that you can play to your hearts content – insttructions nothing! EDIT- Oh and one more thing the flash is not a fast one so will not repeatedly flash when using continuous shooting or bracketing on your camera, so it is only suitable for single exposures. When you switch the flash on it will automatically set itself to Jesxops mode, so providing the camera is in Auto mode or is set with a mode that has flash enabled the camera will simply send information to the flash telling it what intensity to use.
